How Graduates into Health helped me at Essentia

This year, as part of our aim to ‘grow our own talent’ we have embarked on establishing a Graduate Development Programme to specifically attract bright and ambitious graduates who want to work as construction project managers in the healthcare environment. However, our links to local universities are not well developed and we have no means of targeting recent graduates; to reach them we would have had to rely on an expensive and inefficient scatter gun approach.

A colleague then introduced me to Graduates into Health (GiH) – a small team responsible for running a programme developed in Health Innovation Network to help recruit high-flying graduates into business function roles in the NHS. We met with Louise and Palvasha, who I was delighted to learn specialise in the entire process of placing adverts, preparing applicants’ information for sifting, arranging online assessments and – of great assistance to me – coordinating the candidates and their tasks during the Assessment and Interviews Day. Whilst they do need to charge fees to cover their operating costs – their experience in delivering exactly the service we require and their access to precisely the pool of candidates we want to attract, meant the fee was very good value for money.

It is somewhat of an understatement to say that I have been really impressed with the support we have received from what is a small but really effective team – we had 48 applicants from GiH and all were worth evaluating along with the 33 applicants that came through our HR team. My problem was then how to shortlist and subsequently select from such a good pool of candidates. Thankfully, Louise and Palvasha were with us every step of the way, giving advice and guidance, saving our time and supporting our final decision making process to ensure we employed the most suitable candidate. I have no doubt that their in-depth understanding and appreciation of what we require was not just due to their experience of attracting graduates but because they themselves are part of the NHS; they were clearly as determined as we were, to select the best possible candidates.

Our recruitment needs continue and I am convinced that, as the NHS’ own specialist graduate recruitment professionals, we should continue to use Graduates into Health to do what they are good at, so that I and my colleagues can focus on delivering department objectives. I’m looking forward to working with Louise and Palvasha in the future and highly recommend them.
