Rapid Uptake Products (RUPs)

The Rapid Uptake Products (RUP) programme, delivered from April 2021 to March 2023, was designed to support stronger adoption and spread of proven innovations. It identified and supported products with NICE approval that support the NHS Long Term Plan’s key clinical priorities, but had lower than expected uptake to date. The HIN supported the adoption of the following innovations on the RUP Programme:

  1. Lipid Management: High Intensity Statins, Ezetimibe and PCSK9 inhibitors

The HIN supported primary care in identifying patients at greatest risk and optimising their treatment through appropriate therapies, including HIST and ezetimibe, as well as the implementation of local pathways for referral to secondary care, and possible treatment with PCSK9 inhibitors or other therapies where appropriate. The HIN’s work on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention continues – details can be found here.

2. Measuring fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) concentration in asthma: products NIOX VERO and NObreath

The HIN supported GP practices and PCNs in the adoption and roll out of FeNO testing equipment and associated processes for patient identification and management. The Wessex Academic Health Science Network created a FeNO delivery toolkit, which contains downloadable tools, resources and case studies of best practice to support the adoption of FeNO testing. Further resources were also developed through the Pathway Transformation-funded work in south London, these can be accessed here.

3. Biologics for treating severe asthma: Reslizumab, Benralizumab, Mepolizumab and Omalizumab

The HIN worked with primary care to expand use of freely available proactive care tools, and with respiratory teams across south London to improve uptake of educational resources and patient information materials. The HIN also worked with respiratory networks to adopt the AAC consensus pathway for uncontrolled asthma.
