Partners With People: The involvement bulletin from Health Innovation Network

Message from Sophie Lowry

Happy New Year!

As we enter the new year, this is a great time to reflect on what was achieved in 2023 as well as looking forward to what 2024 has in store. During 2023, some personal highlights at the HIN were the recruitment of our Lived Experience Partners, the completion of a patient safety project looking at chronic pain through the use of experience based co-design methodology, and a fab celebration event for the HEAL-D programme with our Experts by Experience reference group.

Whilst elsewhere in the health and care system, the focus on involvement continued to grow – with more organisations recognising the immense value that working with people and communities can bring, and more resources being developed to support this work. Such as the launch of the NHS England resource guide to co-production and quality improvement, and the monthly ‘Shine the Light on Coproduction’ (which the HIN presented at in November) events which attract large numbers of people, from across the country, to hear about best practice examples of coproduction, presented by people with lived and learnt experience.

Looking forward to the year ahead, we have lots of exciting projects at the HIN, with plenty of opportunities to get involved. Currently we are looking for people to join our experience based codesign project on pulmonary rehabilitation, as well as for people with experience of virtual wards to join a reference group.  For more details on these, please see the ‘ways to get involved’ section.

As always, we are really interested in hearing from anyone with interest in this area and are happy to include any partner updates in future newsletters. Please do contact me on Sophie.lowry2@nhs.net if there is anything you’d like to share or discuss.

Ways to get involved

Have you, or someone you care for been referred to pulmonary rehab?

The HIN are looking to speak to people who live, or use healthcare services in south east London, are aged over 18 and fit one of the below categories:

  • Have used pulmonary rehab services in south London to manage your lung condition.
  • Have been referred to pulmonary rehab services to manage your lung condition, but did not attend or complete the course.
  • Are a carer of someone who fits either of the above categories.

The aim of this project is to help improve the pathway for patients who are referred to pulmonary rehab, and who would benefit from associated mental health or wellbeing support.

To take part, you can take part in a 45minute interview and/or attend a series of workshops. You will be paid for your time.

To find out more information, please email Sophie.lowry2@nhs.net

South East London Polypharmacy Community of Practice upcoming meetings

The South East London Integrated Care Board (ICB) has worked with the Health Innovation Network south London to create a Community of Practice for Polypharmacy (the use of multiple medications). This is where a group of people (patients, carers, and health and care staff) come together with a shared interest in ensuring people are taking the right medicines.

There are two upcoming in-person meetings located in south east London on Wednesday 28 February 2024 and Wednesday 20 March 2024

You do not need to attend all sessions, and Experts by Experience can be paid for their time

If you are interested in taking part or would like more information please contact Natasha Callender: natasha.callender3@nhs.net

Do you live in South West London and been referred to a hospital for suspected skin cancer?

Calling all people with Parkinson’s and their carers

A research team at King’s College London are looking for people with Parkinson’s and/or their carers for a research study aiming to understand the experience of taking medications for Parkinson’s. Many people with Parkinson’s take medication regularly and often take more than one type.

Currently, there is very little information on whether people have difficulties with taking their Parkinson’s medication and what they might be. Taking part involves attending a single focus group with up to 8 others for an hour via a video call (MS TEAMS).

For more information please contact: Shelley Jones, shelley.1.jones@kcl.ac.uk , Consultant Pharmacist in Neurosciences at King’s College Hospital.

Do you have any news or great examples of work related to involvement for a future bulletin? Let Sophie Lowry know.

Adopting the Triangle of Commitment to work in partnership with people and communities in health and social care

Aurora, one of our HIN Lived Experience Partners, has recently published a framework to help combat the challenge many organisations face when trying to build meaningful partnerships with people and communities. This is the Triangle of Commitment.

This is a framework that works as a visual tool to spotlight three crucial elements to fostering a beneficial working relationship with healthcare professionals and individuals with lived experience.

Find out more about how the Triangle of Commitment can help create positive environments for involving people and communities in improving health and care.
