Partners With People: The involvement bulletin from Health Innovation Network

Message from Sophie Lowry

Welcome to the June edition of Partners with People.

In April, I was fortunate to present at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and BMJ International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare alongside Faith and Aurora (HIN Lived Experience Partners), and Catherine Dale (Programme Director, Patient Safety). Over a fireside chat, we discussed the HIN approach to involvement and our Lived Experience Partner role.

The conference had a strong focus on involvement throughout, and people with lived experience played a central role in the planning and delivery of the event. It was fantastic to see and really shone a light on the importance of partnering with people to achieve improvement in healthcare.

Meanwhile, at the HIN, there are numerous involvement initiatives underway. Notably, our experience-based co-design project on pulmonary rehabilitation and mental health is nearing completion this month and has involved working with a fantastic group of patients and staff to codesign recommendations around this topic in south east London. Look out for outputs in September’s issue!

Additionally, we are conducting several focus groups for people with early-onset diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as workshops to improve the 111 pathway. For more details on upcoming activities like these, please refer to the ‘ways to get involved’ section.

This position has given me the opportunity to say a (temporary) goodbye and introduce Kristina Leonnet, who will be taking over the involvement manager role from July for six months. Please do reach out and say hi!

Kristina says: “I'm very excited to have this opportunity to work closer with people with lived experience and community and partner organisations as the insights you provide are essential to making sure our work meets the needs of patients, service users and carers. Please do not hesitate to reach out if there's anything you'd like to discuss or collaborate on.”

As always, we are very interested in hearing from anyone with an interest in this area and are happy to include any partner updates in future newsletters. Please contact Kristina if there is anything you’d like to share or discuss.

Have your say on the NHS Constitution

The NHS Constitution sets out the principles, values, rights and pledges underpinning the NHS as a comprehensive health service, free at the point of use for all who need it.

It empowers patients, staff and the public to know and exercise their rights to help drive improvements in quality, efficiency, and responsiveness throughout the NHS. It brings together, in one place, existing rights as set out in various legislation.

The NHS constitution, last updated in 2015, must be updated at least every 10 years by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

This national consultation runs for 8 weeks and closes at 11.59pm on Tuesday 25 June: NHS Constitution: 10-year review - Department of Health and Social Care (dhsc.gov.uk).
