Welcome to the October edition of Partners with People

September signalled the start of conference season, including the return of HETT - Healthcare Excellence Through Technology. Our Lived Experience Partners, Faith Smith and Aurora Todisco, were invited to be part of a panel on Navigating Patient Data Access - a topic with growing importance as projects like the One London Health Data Strategy continue to develop.

Faith reflects on her experience of taking part in a panel discussion: "It was a very exciting prospect to be sitting on a panel at HETT. The preparation beforehand was key to feeling confident and ready for the event. Excel London, were the conference was held, was very busy and buzzy, and everyone was so friendly and supportive.

I attended the session before mine in the same space, which helped me get a feel for the experience. Joining the panel, it was great to see a couple of familiar HIN faces in the audience. I volunteered to respond to the first question on how to address and recognise patients input. Throughout I was able to suggest solutions to the challenges around data, such as actually asking patients their opinions and wishes. I believe my contributions as a Lived Experience Partner offered a strategic voice that made a real difference to the panel."

On the importance of patient data access, Aurora writes: "We were excited to be offered the opportunity to join panels at HETT, which focused on the critical topic of patient data. Although I couldn't attend in person, I was thrilled to contribute remotely to the discussion on how patient involvement can shape the future of healthcare data. Ensuring patients have a voice in how their data is used is essential, and it's inspiring to see these conversations taking place on such a prominent stage. While data is the backbone of modern healthcare, it’s patient involvement that transforms it into meaningful change. The insights and perspectives from those who rely on health services are crucial to building trust and creating systems that truly serve people’s needs."

In this edition of Partners with People, Faith and Aurora share their top tips for navigating conferences, whether you are a regular speaker or a first time visitor. We also bring you the latest news from the HIN and updates from our partners.

News from the HIN

Cancer and Serious Mental Illness: Patient Resources

Working in partnership with people with lived experience and mental health services, the South East London Cancer Alliance and the Health Innovation Network South London (HIN) have developed new online resources to help people with serious mental illness feel more confident and in control when it comes to cancer.

The content was co-designed with people with lived experience and has been reviewed for clinical and factual accuracy. The resources also include videos from a person with lived experience of cancer and serious mental illness.

You can find out more about the impact of people with lived experience in our You Said, We Did involvement summary, which we created to help close the loop and share the difference those involved made.

NHS 111 Transformation

London's NHS 111 is being transformed to meet service demand sustainably for the future. The changes aim to shift patients who access the 111 services by phone onto digital pathways and online services, which enables them to access appropriate care in a timely way.

The HIN is supporting NHS England London engage with patients to ensure that the changes reflect their needs and benefit patients and the system as a whole. This includes two workshops with people who had recently used the NHS 111 service.

Patients were recruited through the networks of London’s Healthwatch and information about the patient insights project resulted in over 150 Londoners volunteering to support the work. Recommendations identified through the workshops have now been discussed with the NHS England London team working on the digital transformation of 111.

For more information about the work please contact Kate Lambe or Helen Sheldon.

Top Tips for Navigating Conferences: From Attending to Speaking

Six people sitting at a panel at HETT in front of a blue screen.
One way to emphasise the importance of integrating lived experience into health and care is through conferences. Panels and talks can encourage conversations, learning and change, whilst providing a platform for people with lived experience to share their views on pressing challenges in health and care.

If you’re new to conferences, or even a regular speaker, anxiety and imposter syndrome can sometimes overshadow the opportunity to talk or attend.

Reflecting on their experiences preparing for and attending this year's HETT, our Lived Experience Partners, Faith Smith and Aurora Todisco, share their advice for navigating conferences.
