Welcome

Welcome to Partners with People, the new involvement bulletin from the Health Innovation Network.

At the Health Innovation Network, we are committed to empowering patients, carers and communities to influence the health and care landscape.

The people of south London are at the heart of all we do, and we're passionate about creating a culture where involvement (sometimes called Patient and Public Involvement or PPI) is embedded in our work.

This includes:

  • helping people who work in health and care realise the benefits of involvement;
  • maintaining momentum on understanding its importance; and,
  • communicating the diversity of ways that people and communities can proactively be involved in improving health and care.

We've set up Partners with People to help share learning on patient involvement, build a community to share expertise and keep you up-to-date on our work in this space. Please share with anyone you know who may be interested and contact Sophie Lowry if you would like to subscribe.

In this edition you can find out about the launch of our new Involvement Strategy as well as upcoming events and partner news.

HIN Lived Experience Partners

As part of our commitment to partnering with people, we are looking to recruit Lived Experience Partners to work with us part-time (approx. one day a week). This role will be to advise on involvement across all HIN projects and to help inform our strategy. Applications open on 1 November and close on 27 November. To find out more, please contact HIN involvement.

Involvement Strategy Launch

We're delighted to be launching our first ever Involvement Strategy on 1 November.

With input from more than 65 stakeholders - including members of the public who have lived experience of health and care services in south London, HIN members, and HIN staff - the strategy sets out our vision for involvement, defining the principles and expectations which we will use to inform our work.

The launch of our Involvement Strategy is an important milestone in our commitment to improve the standard of patient involvement in health and care, ultimately improving service design and health outcomes for patients.

Please help spread the word by sharing with your networks. We are able to provide payment to members of the public for their time and reasonable travel expenses - please contact sophie.lowry2@nhs.net prior to the event to arrange this.

The launch will take place at 10am on Tuesday 1 November at The Robens Suite, on the 29th floor of Guy's Hospital Tower Guy's Hospital. Find out more about the involvement strategy launch and register on Eventbrite.

Unlocking the Power of Involvement

'Start with people' is the mantra that underpins NHS England's recently published statutory guidance for Working in partnership with people and communities. At the Health Innovation Network, we think this message also applies to the ways that we turn the good intentions of the strategy into real benefits for patients and services.

Given how busy we know health and care staff are we had initial reservations about the length of the strategy document as a catalyst for change. You can find out more about unlocking the power of involvement in this blog from the HIN's Sophie Lowry and Catherine Dale.

NHS England's Lived Experience Partners

We were recently involved in recruiting a number of lived experience partners for NHS England. Catherine and Sophie both sat on interview panels and found it a privilege to work in partnership with NHS England and hear from some incredibly passionate people about why they want to be involved in shaping health and care services.

The experience was eye-opening and has helped us to inform our own lived experience partner roles. Find out more about involvement opportunities with NHS England.
