I'm delighted to write the introduction for the second Mindset-XR Innovator Support Newsletter.
I recently chaired our first roundtable which was attended by clinicians, advisors and investors in XR technologies, and I was struck by the wish of all in the room to see this technology used to find innovative solutions for everyone with mental health conditions.
If you are reading this newsletter you obviously have a similar wish. I hope that together we can move forward in partnership with Innovate UK to provide real alternative options to current available treatments.
I'm excited to see where the journey takes us.

The economic and social costs of mental ill health
A recent report commissioned by the NHS Confederation’s Mental Health Network and produced by the Centre for Mental Health has found that the total cost of mental ill health in England in 2022 was £300 billion.
This figure includes losses to the economy due to mental ill health, reduced quality of life for people living with mental health conditions and support provided by public services alongside informal help from friends and family.

UK Government announces major investment to enhance skills in future technologies
Science Secretary Michelle Donelan has unveiled plans to invest over £1.1 billion in improving skills across in the UK around artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. The announcement is seen as an acknowledgement of how important these advanced technologies are likely to be for the country’s future prosperity.

Future Economy Investor Partnerships SME
Innovate UK, as part of UK Research and Innovation, has selected a pool of investor partners. These investor partners have demonstrated that they have the credibility, capability, capacity and appetite to invest in innovative, technology-led businesses that align with their programmes. These programmes will focus on the future economy as described in Innovate UK's plan for action.
This approach aims to provide small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) with support for research and development and access to the capital investment they need to develop and commercialise their innovations.
Companies will need to establish a relationship and a level of investment traction with one of Innovate UK's approved investor partners before they can apply for funding.

Innovation Loans Future Economy Competition: Round 14
Innovate UK is offering up to £25 million in loans to micro, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Loans are for highly innovative late stage research and development (R&D) projects with the best potential for the future. There should be a clear route to commercialisation and economic impact.
Your project must lead to innovative new products, processes or services that are significantly ahead of others currently available, or propose an innovative use of existing products, processes or services. It can also involve a new or innovative business model.
Competition closes: Wednesday 1 May at 11:00am.

Future Leaders Fellowships: round 9, business and non-academic
UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £110 million for ambitious research and innovation projects in any sector, and tailored support to develop careers for future leaders. This funding is from UKRI.

UK-Canada Immersive Technology Global Expert Mission (GEM) Dissemination Event
Online, 30 April 3pm-6pm
In January 2024 a group of immersive technology experts from the UK visited Canada. Their GEM findings from this trip will be presented at this dissemination event, followed by an opportunity for delegates to ask questions. There will also be networking opportunities for attendees after the presentation and Q&A.
The GEM brought together key experts from industry and academia in both the UK and Canada to explore the progress, challenges, and opportunities for collaboration on immersive technology. The findings from this exciting collaboration have been captured in the Mission Report.
