Contact usIn December 2023, NICE released guidance that adults with Type 1 diabetes are to be offered to be put on a Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) system. This is a device which links continuous glucose monitoring with insulin pump technology to monitor blood glucose and automatically adjust the amount of insulin given through a pump.
Under this new guidance, there are five times as many people who are now eligible for HCL technologies compared to current insulin pump use, offering a big step forward in diabetes care. However, healthcare systems were provided with five years, starting in April 2024, to put these new guidelines into practice, which means balancing the potential benefits for patients with the practical challenges of funding and staffing.
While most of the extra costs for the devices and supplies will be covered, this will undoubtedly increase the workload demand on healthcare staff in diabetes services as they support the switch to this technology.
The Health Innovation Network (HIN) South London, in collaboration with King’s Health Partners and clinical leads across south east London, identified the need for a workforce planning and capacity modelling tool to support diabetes services. This tool supports services to quantify the capacity needed to implement HCL technology while ensuring effective service delivery.
The workforce capacity modelling tool focuses exclusively on adult Type 1 diabetes services, including transitions from paediatric services. It is designed to:
Forecast type 1 diabetes caseload and HCL uptake, outpatient clinics and numbers of education classes required.
Estimate educator and administrative capacity needs across the HCL pathway, including structured education.
This tool enables Type 1 diabetes service leads to plan services and budgets annually, develop business cases for additional capacity to meet commissioning targets, and support commissioners in coordinating HCL implementation across the ICS.
We recommend reading the PDF user guide thoroughly before attempting to generate insights.
We have provided step-by-step instructions for how to use the modelling tool effectively. Please read this guide prior to using the modelling tool, and ensure you have the required data available to access the full functionality of the model.
A thorough walkthrough of the tool's features and functionality, and how to use the model with the support of the user guide.
Recording of the model’s launch event, with expert insights on using the tool for HCL implementation and a Q&A session with NHS service users.
Please note that this model was developed with support from non-promotional education grants provided by Dexcom, Insulet, and Abbott.
