South London Optimisation and Stabilisation of the Preterm Infant

We are delighted to have the opportunity to continue supporting our south London perinatal teams to implement and sustain improvements to the nine elements of preterm perinatal optimisation as stated in the Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle Version 3 – Element 5. This programme of work has been continued since 2019.

Click here to see the support we offered to our local units in 2022/23 and 2023/24.

The nine elements to be improved for all births below 34 weeks’ gestation are as follows:

  • Birth in the right place
  • Antenatal administration of magnesium sulphate
  • Antenatal corticosteroids
  • Intravenous antibiotics
  • Delayed cord clamping
  • Thermoregulation
  • Early breast milk
  • Neonatal caffeine administration
  • Neonatal volume targeted ventilation

To support communication between parents and clinicians in the event of preterm labour diagnosis, or an acute need to deliver a baby prematurely, the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) created a series of posters, a 9-element Perinatal Optimisation Clinical Passport and a 9-element Perinatal Optimisation Baby Passport communication tool that is available in English and a Trans-friendly version here.

Perinatal Optimisation Passport Translations

At the Health Innovation Network South London, we identified that the demographic of our service users has a significant need for resources translated into their first language, which is very commonly not English. We have successfully and locally funded the translation of the BAPM ‘Baby Passport’ for parents into the 25 most spoken languages in south London.

BAPM kindly permitted this accredited translation to proceed but is unable to verify the documents themselves. With thanks to the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust Language Support Team who completed the translations on our behalf:
